Frank Coffield's research report on teaching in FE

Frank Coffield has written a report called “Just suppose teaching and learning became the first priority”. You can download it from the Learning Skills Network for nothing. A quick skim might boost morale, but don’t feel you need to read the whole thing in detail.

As a teacher I have been confronted with many students who don’t know how to hold a pencil correctly. This doesn’t just [a]ffect handwriting but how well you can draw. Drawing is pretty important if you want to be a designer or artist. At least it used to be…
Many of the students we spoke to are making some use of their own tools to socialise and network in personal and public spaces, and in doing so are actually supporting their learning in that they use these tools to communicate and share information and resources between themselves and their peers, even though they did not necessarily view this themselves as ‘learning’ per se.
Journalism that people get paid to do—nowadays, so far as I can tell—is about access and betrayal. You try to get access to people, institutions and situations that the public is interested in, that either have some celebrity value, or some intrigue value. You get really close to your subject, and you sell them out.
